Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake: key storylines as goals turn scarce on both sides
Seattle Sounders host Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer with both teams desperate to rediscover their scoring touch, and RSL arriving as the tougher side to break down.
For Seattle, the honest story is one of frustration in front of goal. Their recent stretch has produced next to nothing in attack, and a run without a win has turned the pressure up on a team that expects to be pushing at the sharp end of the table. The message from the dressing room will be simple: put chances away and the mood changes quickly.
Real Salt Lake, by contrast, have built their momentum on the back of a settled, stubborn defence. Clean sheets have become their calling card, and they will fancy their chances of frustrating a Seattle side struggling to find the net. The challenge for RSL is at the other end, where goals have been just as hard to come by, so a single moment of quality could decide everything.
The head-to-head adds a little edge. When these two last met earlier in the campaign, Real Salt Lake edged a tight 2-1 win, and Seattle will not have forgotten it. Home advantage gives the Sounders a reason to believe they can flip that result and reward supporters who have been patient through a lean spell.
Recruitment has reshaped both squads over the year, with Salt Lake adding fresh faces from Europe to bolster their spine while Seattle have juggled comings and goings of their own. How those new pieces settle into the rhythm of a demanding league season could be the subtle difference on the night.
Expect a contest of fine margins: Seattle chasing the game with intent, Real Salt Lake happy to sit in and strike on the break. If the Sounders find an early opening, the atmosphere could carry them; if not, RSL have shown they know how to make a low-scoring night work in their favour.
