Portland Timbers II vs St. Louis City II: draw specialists collide in MLS Next Pro
Two of MLS Next Pro's most stubborn stalemate merchants meet in Portland, with both Timbers II and St. Louis City II arriving on the back of gritty draws and hunting the win that could reshape their group-stage push.
The Timbers II have made a habit of not losing and not quite winning either. Three straight draws have left the young Portland group unbeaten in their recent run but craving that decisive result, with a squad packed full of teenagers and early-twenties talent still learning how to turn control into three points. Two clean sheets in their last five tells you the defensive structure is there; the challenge is finding the cutting edge up front.
St. Louis City II arrive with a slightly bumpier ride behind them. Their last outing ended 1-1 at Sporting KC II, extending a season peppered with draws, but there have been flashes of quality too, including a tidy 1-0 win over North Texas and a confident 3-0 dismantling of Real Monarchs. This is a side that can score in bunches when the mood takes them, even if consistency has been elusive.
The subplot writes itself. When these two met back in July, the game finished level at 1-1, another entry in a season where both teams seem magnetically drawn to the honours-even column. That result gives this rematch an edge; nobody enjoys the sensation of unfinished business, and there is a quiet determination on both benches to settle the argument this time.
Tactically, expect a chess match between two well-drilled defensive units. Portland will lean on their home comfort and the energy of attackers like Andrew Guerra and Colin Griffith to break the deadlock, while St. Louis will trust the experience dotted through their backline to soak up pressure and spring forward on the counter. Whoever blinks first in midfield could decide the afternoon.
For the developing players on show, moments like these matter more than the table suggests. Every minute is an audition, every goal a line on a CV, and both academies are watching closely to see who steps up when the pressure lands. That is the beauty of MLS Next Pro: raw ambition on full display, with careers taking shape in real time.
